This is the landing page to my Gallery, which I arranged into slideshows and displayed in separate pages to cut loading time. The Asian slideshows relating to my upcoming book series A Love Affair with the Unknown were designed as a visual aid to the individual volumes, and can be found in the related pages.
Most of the images are unprofessionally digitized slides, cropped manually to fit the layout of smartphones, tablets, and computer screens. Due to their vertical vs horizontal constraints, I sometimes chose different pictures for different devices. On smartphones, you can adjust them to fit your vertical screen size.
Enjoy!

A note about taking pictures in the 90s
At the time, all cameras were bulky, conspicuous, and worth a lot of money. Traveling solo as a woman meant I couldn’t use mine whenever I wanted to, for fear of being robbed, or worse. Their bulk, conspicuousness, and novelty – especially in far-away areas – also created a distance, setting me apart from the local people I met. Hence, I never took pictures in moments of intimacy, fearful to remind the other of my touristy nature.
Other major problems were that they ran on film spools, each containing only thirty-two images, and that I used slide films, which were so difficult to source I kept counts in my diaries in an attempt to pace them. Since sending the spent spools home was a risk, I carried them all in my bag, always worried about its placement for fear they would get spoiled by the heat. Moreover, I never knew how good the pictures were until my return. Imagine the joy, after carrying them around for months or years, to see the ones that turned out good – and the disappointment for the ones that did not.

Starting in a hollowed log of wood – some thousand miles up a river,
with an infinitesimal prospect of returning!
I ask myself ‘Why?’
And the only echo is ‘damned fool!… the Devil drives’.
